Guide
The BMW R80 rebuild
Why the R80 is the most popular base for custom builds
Hardly any boxer engine has been built for as long and in as many variants as the R80 – from the R80/7 to the R80 RT and ST, all the way to the R80 R. This makes them readily available, spare parts are plentiful, and the 800cc engine is considered virtually indestructible. For custom builders, it is therefore the ideal middle ground between performance, weight, and budget.
We explain this step-by-step in our BMW R80 conversion guide.

Café racer, scrambler, or roadster?
- Café Racer: Clip-on handlebars, single-seat tail with cowl, short front end – ideally based on a twin-shock model.
- Scrambler: Wide handlebars, high-mounted exhaust, knobby tires – works well with a monolever or based on the R80 GS.
- Roadster: Comfortable two-person tail, tubular handlebars, clean wiring – the everyday hero.
We have tailored tail conversion kits with TÜV approval for every style.

FAQ
Questions about BMW R80
Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.
Is the R80 or the R100 the better base for a conversion?
The R80 is more affordable, easier to acquire, and very robust. The R100 offers more displacement and power. Both share many parts – the deciding factors are your budget and your riding style.
Which R80 parts have TÜV approval or ABE?
Heckrahmen, Heckumbau-Kits, Kennzeichenträger und viele Auspuffanlagen liefern wir mit TÜV-Gutachten bzw. ABE. Die genaue Angabe findest du beim jeweiligen Produkt.
Do the parts fit Twinshock and Monolever models?
Nein, nicht alle. Heck- und Fahrwerksteile sind variantenspezifisch. Achte auf die Angabe „Twinshock“ oder „Monolever“ im Produkttitel – im Zweifel hilft dir unsere Teileanfrage.
Can Sport Evolution completely rebuild my R80?
Ja. Wir bauen R80-Umbauten komplett in unserer Manufaktur in Neuwied auf – inklusive Motorrevision und Eintragung. Bei Bedarf holen wir dein Motorrad deutschlandweit ab. Schreib uns über den Kontakt.
Is there a conversion guide for the R80?
Yes, our detailed R80 conversion guide shows you which parts you need and the order in which to proceed.
