Guide

The BMW R100 rebuild

The R100 as a base for customization

With a displacement of nearly one liter, the R100 is the most powerful classic boxer – ideal for anyone who doesn't want to compromise on performance and torque when building a custom bike. It was built in many variants: R100/7, R100S, R100RS, R100RT, R100CS, and finally the R100R with its retro look.

You can find all the basics in the BMW R100 Customization Guide.

Twinshock, Monolever, or Paralever?

  • Twinshock (up to 1984): the classic foundation for purist café racers.
  • Monolever (from 1984/86): single-sided swingarm with one shock absorber, slightly more modern.
  • Paralever (R100R, R100GS): torque arm on the driveshaft, the most comfortable suspension.

Rear and chassis parts are specifically designed for each. The GS variants have their own page: BMW GS conversion parts.

The most important conversion parts for the R100

  • Rear frames & rear conversion kits with TÜV approval – 1-person café racer, roadster, 2-person with step.
  • Exhaust systems with ABE (general operating permit) in classic or bobber style.
  • Suspension: shock absorbers, fork damping systems, progressive springs.
  • Engine & performance: overhaul, cylinder heads, carburetors, ignition.
  • Electrics: complete wiring harnesses for modern instruments.

Performance and test bench

The R100 in particular benefits from a clean overhaul and tuning. On our dynamometer, we document the difference between stock and tuned performance in black and white. For more extensive engine work, our engine building department is at your service.

FAQ

Questions about BMW R100

Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.

Which R100 is the best base for a café racer?

For classic café racers, the twin-shock models up to 1984 are particularly popular – such as the R100/7, R100S, or R100RS. The faired RS and RT models are often available at a good price because the fairing is removed during the conversion anyway.

Do the R100 conversion parts have TÜV approval?

Many of our tail conversion kits, rear frames, license plate holders, and exhaust systems are supplied with a TÜV certificate or ABE (General Operating Permit). Details can be found on the product page.

Do these parts also fit the R80?

A great many. The R80 and R100 share the same frame and numerous components. You can find all parts for the R80 under BMW R80 conversion parts.

Do you also offer installation?

Yes. In our workshop in Neuwied, we can install parts or customize your entire motorcycle – with a nationwide pickup service available upon request.

How much power does the R100 have?

This depends on the condition and the scope. A revision with tuning often provides noticeably more torque. For an individual assessment, please use our contact form.
